Trying to hit dramatic beats on certain pages leads to motivation drift.
I read a script about a relationship, and on a given page it was time for them to break up, so they had a fight. Except the fight was completely unmotivated and required that the girlfriend end the relationship over an issue that she had to do a 180 to care about.
That’s asking me to eat a whole bag of Cheetos. It looks fake, it tastes fake and it leaves me feeling ill.
Go organic.
Organic conflicts arise naturally in their own time. You can find them wherever people want or believe mutually exclusive things that are incredibly important to them.
When those honest conflicts happen, you don’t even notice it’s plot, it’s just gripping story that makes you turn the page.
