Which you know if you’ve ever tried to make someone like you by being nice.
You can make a story out of:
- A nice person diving into the nasty pool
- A nasty person doing laps in the nasty pool
- A nasty person climbing out of the nasty pool for a redeeming purpose
But there is zero story in a nice person standing at the edge of the nasty pool and never getting wet.
Generally, people prefer to hide the things they don’t think of as nice. Cowardice, anger, intolerance, insecurity, violence, greed, envy, hopelessness, a hentai Tumblr. That is exactly where the story is.
Apply pressure to a nice character and watch a geyser of grade A drama and conflict pour out.
