I do not know what a spilled cup of coffee is supposed to convey about a character or their situation. It is utterly meaningless. It is coffee that spilled.
Could it be meaningful? Perhaps if it was spilled on something important, then it would be plot.
Spilling coffee to get your protag off to a rough start is a boring cliche.
