So I decided to read and remark upon all the awards scripts that are going around in Caty’s excellent post.
Ex Machina takes the idea that an AI robot built in the shape of a hot girl will learn from her woman-loathing male creator and captor how to seduce, manipulate and kill to effect her escape.
It would have been interesting as a gender study if there was some control group involved in the Turing Test, to see how AI robots who aren’t in hot girl chassis respond to being held against their will.
It’s annoying how obsessed it is with turning its women characters into literal objects while smugly taking the position that that is really bad.
I’ve seen clips of this film, and it looks stylish, though. Stylish enough to cover up the not very engaging who’s-gaming-who chassis, even.
Either way…
