So I decided to read and remark upon all the awards scripts that are going around in Caty’s excellent post.

I Smile Back takes a look at the multi-generational toll of substance abuse, up close and personal.

Laney is a woman at war with her picture perfect suburban marriage. It’s heartbreaking and hyper-realistic and hopeless.

It’s a tough one, because its protagonist is well-illuminated but so trapped and addicted that all she can do is destroy the people who love her, even when given the gift that has the power to heal her. It makes sympathizing with her impossible.

Tough to sell. The family scenes are necessarily familiar, so there’s not a lot of room for fresh story. A role of a lifetime, though.
