Yes, don’t listen to any advice that isn’t “it’s great, keep going” while you’re in the process of writing a book. When the book is done in first draft, give it to beta readers. Listen to what they have to say. If there are things that all or most of them bump into that throw them out of the book, then fix those things. If people point out things you knew in your heart when you were writing you needed to fix but didn’t, fix those things too.
Don’t try to make everybody happy. Try to make the people who like what you are doing even happier, instead.
(And just because something is not common, does not mean it’s wrong or you should change anything, it just means it’s not common.)
