If you think like an actor, which means creating a sensible string of motivations and reactions and plans so that the character behaves like a person instead of a mechanism to move the plot to a given point on a given page, then half your story is done.
Plots are backdrops. They are interesting theories and timelocks and landscapes for coherent, interesting, struggling characters to inhabit.The characters are the story. The plot is just there to demonstrate what kind of people they are.
