Wherein Social Media Assistant Manager Marya E. Gates ( @oldfilmsflicker) Suggests You Watch More Films Directed By Women.

In 2015 I spent the entire year watching films directed by women (you can look back at that journey here). It was a wonderful year filled with lots of new discoveries and personal growth. Towards the end of that year Women In Film launched their 52 Films By Women challenge. It’s pretty easy. You just try to watch at least one film a week directed (or co-directed) by a woman. I’ve done it for the past two years (and usually surpass 52 between watching new releases and old releases). It helps me stretch my viewing and seek out new voices and I always discover hidden gems.

With that in mind, I wanted to give you a glimpse at some of the films directed by women that can be found right now on FilmStruck. We have spotlights featuring directors like Jane Campion, Shirley Clarke, and Margarethe von Trotta, but we also have many other films directed by women from all over the world and stretching all the way back into the 1920s. The selection below features some films that I know and love and some that I intend to watch for the first time this year as well! Keep in mind that some of these films may expire before the end of the year (or even sooner!), so keep an eye on that. Also, this is not all the films directed by women on FilmStruck; we’re always adding new films each week, so if you don’t find anything that piques your interest, keep exploring and I’m sure you’ll find something!
